A pioneering forum on the Environmental concerns in the cement Industry across the African continent

Africa, the world’s second-largest & second most-populous continent, is becoming a “HOT SPOT” in both the Cement industry as well as Environmental Development.

Possessing the world’s largest mineral reserves, untapped agricultural capacity along with infrastructure development potential it is foreseen that the African Cement industry will have the highest growth rates in the next few decades. (Dirk Lechtenberg, MVW Lechtenberg)

Cement investment across the African continent is expected to increase significantly in the next few years. New cement plants have already been commissioned and finance companies have shown a huge interest in the cement manufacturing industry in Africa.

At the same time, there is a consensus among investors, environmentalists, financiers and Governments across Africa to develop a new Waste Management Policy across the continent. Relationships between local authorities and industry can resolve waste issues such as the disposal of domestic waste by recovering the energy bound within it and reducing the need for fossil fuels.

The building industry is a major source of CO2 emissions with cement production alone accounting for almost five per cent of all man-made emissions. For every tonne of cement manufactured, around 800 kgs of carbon dioxide is created as a by-product.

The need of an African Energy Intensive Industries Association is crucial to provide products and information needed for sustainable development within Africa. Partnerships between industries and an African Energy Intensive Industry Association will be essential to ensure competitiveness in a global market. Utilisation of waste and by-products to reduce costs is one method of achieving this.

Marshalling the expertise of key environmental analysts, international cement industry executives and peak cement observers, Environmental Cement Africa Conference Cape Town 2010 presents a two day information-packed event.

The Conference is designed to stimulate discussion amongst a wide audience of delegates in business, public policy, and those concerned with resource supply and environmental issues in the industry.

Some of the topics covered at the 1st Environmental Cement Africa Conference Cape Town 2010:

• Alternative Fuels Projects in Africa
• Financing an energy efficient Cement Plant in Africa
• How Can the Cement Industry Reduce Costs & still improve Productivity with Enhanced Fuel Efficiency?
• Carbon Management in the South African Cement Industry: what options are available locally for carbon emissions mitigation?
• The Carbon Emissions Model for Construction Materials
• African Cement: the needs and evolution in new build capacity
• Grey Cement Market Projection for the next 5 years in Egypt

Environment Cement Africa Conference will be a “must” attend for all participants in the African Cement industry who want to be a part of this significant development and change for the future.Prescon Ltd invites your attendance and participation in our signature event ‘Environmental Cement Africa Conference Cape Town 2010’ Dirk Lechtenberg, Partner, MVW Lechtenberg, Germany

“This conference comes at a crucial inflection point of the global debate on the environment, and particularly climate change. The Cement Sustainability Initiative is proactively addressing key issues such as emissions reductions, alternative fuel use and reduction of impacts on local communities, among many others. Individual company action as well as collaborative efforts, bringing together industry players, NGOs and governmental organizations, are today key to advancing sustainable development in our sector.” Roland Hunziker, World Business Council of Sustainable Development
